Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.” ― Henry Ford
Art has to move you and design does not, unless it’s a good design for a bus.- David Hockney
Informal peer editing: My peer editor suggested that I print preview because information was going to get cut off. They also suggested that I add resources to the back panel. They said my brochure had great visual unity.

What's Going On This Week?
September
WELCOME GRAPHICS I STUDENTS! This will be a busy first week. Freshmen AND new students PLEASE hand in your ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY FORM. You will be unable to log on to the computer unless you return this form which will be given to you in homeroom.
This week students will be introduced to the course, policies, and expectations. Students will take a safety test, get their seating location, and learn or review how to log in as well as safe places to save work. Students will also be introduced to the elements and principles of design and begin working on their first assignment- a collage advertisement.
Students begin working in MS Publisher to create a series of flyers. We discuss unsolicited advertising, targeting a demographic and layout. Students are focusing on shape and color as well as visual unity. The third flyer focuses on contrast- students had to completely redesign one of their 2 flyers using only black and white.

OCTOBER
Students finished their introduction to MS Publisher and created a series of one page, one sheet flyers. Students reviewed and focused on the elements and principles of design, hierarchy of text, demographic, and color symbolism. Students were introduced to the SBRHS school-wide rubrics and wrote their first engineering report in which they write a reflection about their assignment based on the engineering design model: Input, Process, Output, and Feedback.
We had a very successful field trip to Thayer Street in Providence, RI. Students conducted field research, recording their observations and gathering information. They used this information to create a tri-fold visitors brochure for their chosen category: men's apparel, women's apparel, cheap eats, sweets and treats, cafes, fashion highlights, footwear, fine dining, gifts, beauty, or unique services.

NOVEMBER
This month is all about PHOTOSHOP! Students are learning about LAYERS and SELECTION tools to modify and combine images. After demonstrations and class exercises, students will work on album artwork We will discuss the history of audio formats: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_audio_formats
January
Even though digital is taking over (MP3, ITUNES, IPods, Pandora, etc.), album artwork is not obsolete. Students will create artwork for a cd single, and then choose songs to create a multi-page CD booklet. They will research to find out what information must be included. This assignment involves a complex printed publication (custom sizes, multi-page and multi-sheet) as well as focusing on image modification and students personal interests (their own favorite and school appropriate bands).
TERM 3
Students will be working most of this term on a calendar assignment. Students are working with a more complex template, working between Photoshop to create images and MS Publishers to create calendar grids and move files into a print template. Students chose a theme- their calendar must illustrate visual unity through theme and design. There are specific requirements for each sheet (two months). Students will learn new tools in Adobe Photoshop and will expand their knowledge of complex publishing templates. SBRHS rubrics for Technological Literacy, Problem Solving, Presentation, and Writing will be incorporated in the calendar rubric. Each calendar sheet will be worth 10 points and the finished, printed calendar will be a 20 point project grade. Students must really pay attention to sheet due dates and focus on time management in order to have the calendar completed by April 6th.
April
Students wrapped up their calendar assignment. This was a long-term assignment. Students created a 7 sheet, 14 page calendar. They had to choose and illustrate a theme. All work had to be created and modified extensively. Each calendar sheet was graded individually and students learned and used a new tool in Photoshop for each calendar sheet.
We will begin a brand new assignment- students will use their face to create a new brand for a syrup company. We will discuss brands, brand mascots, and design choices such as color association, font choices, etc. when designing a logo.

MAY
Students are working on cookbooks! Each class chose a theme (international food, comfort food, desserts, etc.) Each student found two recipes and are working in Photoshop to design the page. Students must use the CLIPPING MASK tools as well as the CHARACTER MAP tools to make sure all text fits on the page. Students are focusing on color in this assignment. Level 1 students are assigned an additional page such as table of contents, glossary, kitchen safety, etc. Each student will then get a page number and print their recipes from a template (2 recipes per 1 sheet of paper). We will then assemble and bind the recipe books and everyone will get to take one home!
